SYNOPSIS

In the next chapter of Shakespeare’s Plantagenet saga, Bolingbroke now crowned Henry IV is faced with challenges to his reign. His oldest son and heir is engaged in misadventure with the rogue knight Falstaff and a rebellion arises that present a serious threat to the legitimacy of his rule. Coupled with his own guilt over the manner of his ascension, Henry must find a way to face these challenges before England descends into chaos. One of Shakespeare’s most beloved histories, it features some of his most well known characters, the hotheaded malcontent Hotspur, the comical and rogish Falstaff, the spirited Mistress Quickly, as well as the young prince Hal whose destiny awaits him.

AUDITION DETAILS

If you are planning to audition for either Hal or Falstaff and are planning to come on Monday, please be aware that you may need to be seen again on Tuesday. This will apply to other characters as well, if you are planning to come Monday be aware that callbacks may be held the next night, Tuesday July 17th.

CHARACTER INFORMATION

*-Characters with asterisks will appear in both Parts I and II. If you are auditioning for those roles, be aware that you must be available for both shows.

*HENRY IV, Male, Mid 40’s to early 50’s .

Current King of England, Father to Prince Hal and John of Lancaster. He is older and more world weary from his experiences from Richard II along with ruling. He appears to be cold and distant but loves his sons and wants Hal to be a good king. He feels guilt over his actions in becoming king but is still resolute to rule.

*HAL, Male, Early to mid 20’s

Oldest son of Henry. Brother of John of Lancaster. Prince of England and Heir to the throne. He appears to be an irresponsible and immature young man who is hanging around with the knight Falstaff. But in reality, he is an intelligent and charismatic young man who is preparing himself for his destiny as king.

*SIR JOHN FALSTAFF, Male, Mid to late 50’s

A corpulent and cowardly rogue of a knight. He is engaged in petty thievery and other misadventures. He is always full of a jokes and comebacks. Though he and Hal seem to have an adversarial relationship, Falstaff cares for the young prince and views himself as a sort of father figure to the future king.

HOTSPUR, Male, Late 20’s to possibly early 30’s

A dashing and fierce warrior. He is considered honorable and a far superior noble than the delinquent Hal. A fiery and explosive temper lead him to make rash decisions and engage in lengthy diatribes.

*LADY PERCY, Female, same age as Hotspur

Hotspur’s oft neglected wife. She is loyal and devoted to her husband but is not afraid to call him out on his irrational actions. A fierce personality in her own right.

WORCESTER, Male, Early to mid 40’s

Brother to Northumberland and uncle to Hotspur. He is more the apt to action of he and his brother. He plays a large role in helping his nephew organize his forces for rebellion.

SIR WALTER BLUNT, Male, Early to mid 50’s

A highly honorable, honest, and loyal soldier who ultimately makes the biggest sacrifice for his king.

*#JOHN OF LANCASTER, Male, Late teens to early 20’s

Son of Henry IV, Younger brother of Hal. He serves as an advisor to his father. A capable politician and fighter in his own right.

*#WESTMORELAND, Male, Early 40’s

One of King Henry’s  closest advisors. A relative to Northumberland who has remained loyal to the crown. An astute and wise politician.

*#POINS, Male, Mid to late 20’s

One of the members of Falstaff’s group of cohorts. He is a witty and humorous gentlemen who joins Hal most frequently in his jests at the old knight’s expense.

*#BARDOLPH, Male, Mid to late 20’s

Another of Falstaff’s cohorts. He later serves with Hal in the war against the rebels.

#PETO, Male, Mid to late 20’s

Another member of Falstaff’s merry group. Not afraid to engage in shenanigans.

#GADSHILL, Male, Early 30’s

Another of Falstaff’s cohorts. A notorious thief who assists Falstaff in his misdeeds.

*#FRANCIS, Male, Late teens, possibly early 20’s

A tapster at Mistress Quickly’s tavern. He endures several of Falstaff’s and company’s jests.

*MISTRESS QUICKLY, Female, Early 40’s

The exasperated proprietor of the Boar’s Head Tavern, Falstaff and Co’s favorite watering hole. She is witty and intelligent and does not suffer fools lightly. Not afraid to go up against Falstaff and Co. in a battle of wits.

*#NORTHUMBERLAND, Male, Early 50’s

Father of Hotspur. He believes like his son that they have been wronged. He is more deliberate and careful in his decisions than his brother Worcester.

#DOUGLAS, Male, Early 30’s

A Scottish nobleman. A fierce warrior who is loyal to Hotspur.

#RICHARD VERNON, Male, Late 20’s

Cousin to Hotspur. He is loyal to his cousin’s cause and seeks to dethrone Henry.

#MESSENGER, Male, late teens to early 20’s

Servant to Hotspur.

#GLENDOWER, Male, Early 50’s

Welsh Lord, Father to Lady Mortimer and Mortimer’s father-in-law. He is an intimidating and powerful presence. He is being courted by Hotspur to assist in his rebellion against the throne.

#MORTIMER, Male, Early 30’s

Exiled lord, He was named the heir to the throne by Richard II. Hotspur leads his rebellion in the hopes to install Mortimer as King. He is genial and well meaning man.

#LADY MORTIMER, Female, Late 20’s, Must be able to Sing

Daughter of Glendower. Wife to Mortimer. She is fiercely devoted to her husband. A powerful personality in her own right. She only speaks Welsh which leads to communication problems with her husband. (If interested in this roll, please prepare 8-16 bars acapella. Folk and Traditional songs are preferred)

Local lawman. He has dealt with Falstaff and his band of miscreants in the past. He seems to be easily fooled.
